Choosing a wood floor
Why choose a wood floor?
There is nothing like traditional wood floors to provide quality and strength to a property. Wood floors last longer and wear better than other flooring, and provide an extremely hard-wearing surface that is easy to clean and maintain. Good quality wood floors add value to your property, can be combined with a variety of furniture and looks for different settings, and provide a classic addition to any home.
Can I order samples?
Yes. For samples of any of our wood products, please contact us via samples@real-wood-floors.com.
How different will my wood look?
The beauty of traditional wood flooring is in its uniqueness and natural look. This also means that changes in colour and grain will inevitably occur between different wood types, batches and board. Your wood floor will also change slightly as it ages. Please be aware that your wood may not exactly like the picture on the website or anywhere else you have seen it. However, once your floor is properly fitted and used it will certainly look great.
Buying hardwood floors
How much should I purchase?
To allow for the unique shape and layout of your property, you should always order more wood than the basic square metres you measure. Your wood will come in random lengths and give you more flexibility to fit in your room, but we would recommend adding around 10% to your order. Different woods on this website come in different pack sizes, so use our pack size calculator to work out exactly how much you need.
What length are the wood boards?
Our wood comes in random lengths, which makes it easier to fit and more flexible to the shape of your room.
What accessories will I need?
Your need for accessories will depend on who is fitting your floor. Think carefully before you fit your own floor (see "Should I fit the floor myself?" below). If you do decide to do the job yourself, you will have to check your sub-floor. When you buy your wood, check our specific recommendations: some floors with joists may need ply and underlay then the wood, others may only need underlay and the wood. If you do decide to do the job yourself, you will need ply to go on any joists, a damp proof membrane and underlay, and PVA glue or secret nails to fix the wood. You may also need specialist tools and edging material.
Once your floor is fitted, you can get specialist solutions for regular cleaning, and timber polish for yearly maintenance.
Receiving your wood floor
How much does delivery cost?
Delivery is free for orders over £500, and £80 for any orders below this.
How long will delivery take?
Delivery of your wood is 4 days from the day of your order as long as you order before 3pm; a next day delivery service is available at an extra cost of £40.00. Delivery of your wood is by next-day courier. Please bear in mind that we can't leave the wood outside so you will need space to store your flooring before it is fitted. For large orders we also recommend there are people to help unload. All wood will also need to be left in the property for four to five days to acclimatise and avoid change of shape once it is fitted.
Do you offer refunds?
We can offer refunds for genuine problems with the wood purchase. However, if you have simply changed your mind or damaged the wood yourself we are unable to offer refunds after 7 days. If you change your mind within 7 days of your purchase, you can cancel the order and get a refund, but we do have to charge a 20% re-stocking fee, plus the original the cost of delivery (if applicable) and picking up the wood. Please be aware that natural wood will vary in colour and may not be what you expect, and order carefully.
Fitting real wood flooring
Should I fit the floor myself?
Fitting real wood floors is quite difficult and we would recommend that you only fit the floor yourself if you are very confident. The floor will need to be glued and clamped, which can be quite tricky. If you are fitting on joists you will need a ply, on concrete or other flat base you will only need an underlay. You will also need edging and either glue or secret nail to fix the wood. Think very carefully before deciding to fit yourself - if you spend several thousand pounds on a new floor, it is worth investing in a professional fitter.
How do I get a professional fitter?
We cannot recommend individual fitters, but would suggest that you go on recommendation of your friends and family if possible. When you talk to a fitter, ask to see examples of previous jobs (the older the better), and always get a few quotes for your project. Make sure that your fitter provides a fixed quote that won't change and includes any materials, as well as a set schedule for the project. Go with someone you are comfortable with rather than the cheapest around - it is worth investing in a professional. Fitters typically charge around £20-£30 per metre laid.
Maintenance of wood floors
How do I protect my new wood floor?
To maintain the quality and appearance of your new floor, you may want to consider using floor rugs or mats in very busy areas of the room, such as a doorway, landing or under heavy furniture. You can also get special guards and castors for some furniture. Once fitted, your floor can be cleaned with the rest of the house on a weekly basis, by vacuuming and using a dry mop. Once a year revive your floor with some timber polish, and after several years you can revitalise by re-sealing, sanding or re-oiling.
How do I treat stains and damage to my floors?
Special scuff removers are available for shoe marks, while most stains can be removed with a mild detergent, or solvent for the more stubborn offenders. For more serious damage and breakage to the wood, you may need to use wood filler, replace boards and/or re-treat the surface. It may be worth consulting a professional in this instance.
